Historical Castles, Land Marks and Pastimes

Lac Saint Ferreol... a pleasure lake with beach, near Revel, built in the 17th century as the main water reservoir for the Canal du Midi. Various leisure activities are available including canoeing, windsurfing, sailing, pedal boats and swimming. Also ideal for walking and cycling in beautiful mature surroundings. Horse riding is available nearby.

Canal du Midi... built in the 17th Century, this tranquil, tree-lined canal meanders through some of the most glorious French countryside stretching from Toulouse to the Mediterranean. A national and UNESCO heritage site it is a beautiful stretch of water, excellent for hiring a boat and a perfect place to walk or cycle along the tow paths.

Lastours... with imposing towers, the Chateaux of Lastours is perched on the hilltops with spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. During the months of July and August there is a Son et Lumiere (sound and light) display every Thursday and Sunday evening.

Montsegur... where the last stand of the Cathars against the Crusades took place. There are now only ruins but there is a wonderful view of the surrounding area.

The Gouffre du Gabrespine... a natural phenomena, a gorge inside a mountain deep enough to hold the Eiffel tower. There are short tours to see the rock formations or you can take a 5 hour underground walk.

Grottes de Limousis... huge underground grotto consisting of fantastic stalactite and stalagmite formations. Can be visited with guided tours.

Cascade de Cubservies.... stunning remote 50 metre waterfall, ideal for a walk.

Pic de Nore... the local peak  is 1211 metres with a vast panorama of the plain of Carcassonne and the Pyrenees.

Saissac... with spectacular views and a large ruined Cathar castle.

Gruissan Plage / Leucate... for those wanting to visit the Mediterranean beaches here there are seemingly endless beaches, mostly with a very slight gradient perfect for children and adults alike.
